Set Value of UpDownBase<long> in XAML

I have a control that derives from UpDownBase<long> to show a custom editor. When I first tried setting the Value property of my control in Expression Blend, it told me that I was missing a reference to Microsoft.Windows.Controls (I already had a reference to Microsoft.Windows.Controls.Input). After adding the reference, the correct value showed up just fine in the Blend designer.
However, when I try to run my project, a runtime error of AG_E_PARSER_BAD_PROPERTY_VALUE is thrown. Normally I would just accept that it can't be set in XAML and go ahead and set it in the code-behind, but the fact that it works in Blend makes me think I could get it to work at runtime. Is there any way to do this?
